For this Shaper Story we're off over the border to meet Sam of Bob's Boards in Lagos, Portugal. Sam's been using a variety our fin models in his boards for several years now, and also stocks them (and some really good coffee) at the family coffee shop Coffee & Waves.
We sent Sam our Shaper Stories questions to find out a bit more about him and his boards...
Tell us where you’re from and where you’re based.
I'm from the UK, but now I'm based in Lagos in a region called the Algarve in the south of Portugal.
What inspired your logo/brand name?
What inspired your logo/brand name?
My brand name came originally from a drunken night at university when I woke up the next day as Bob or Sam Bob...so this became Bob's Boards! The logo design is from my clever wife who thought it was going to be a huge process but actually I really liked her first attempt after about 5 minutes so we stuck with this one.
Tell us a bit about how, when and why you got into shaping.
Tell us a bit about how, when and why you got into shaping.
I got into shaping really out of necessity, I couldn't at the time afford to buy any surfboards that I liked and I realised it was cheaper to make your own and I could create exactly what I wanted from a surfboard which I couldn't find anywhere else.
What kind of boards do you mostly shape?
What kind of boards do you mostly shape?
The boards I mostly make are classic designs, longboards, minimals, single fins and fishes, but no high performance surfboards, pretty much only surfboards that I would like to surf myself to have fun on.

A good tip for a new shaper is to keep your tools sharp and write down everything you're doing in the build process as a reference.

I think the most memorable board I’ve made was probably my first board, which was a fish I made in my grandfather's garage and then finished on the kitchen table.
